Winter honeysuckle is a lovely addition to the garden with its fragrant creamy yellow flowers. It can grow up to eight feet tall and likes a lot of space in order to flower profusely.

The Christmas rose or hellebore is in flower this month. Skimmia, witch hazel and holly are at their best.

A favourite flowering shrub is the camellia. Colours range from white through to soft pink and deep red. Camellias are woodland shrubs, so they do best in partial shade. They have glossy evergreen leaves and give a welcome splash of late winter and early spring colour.

Camellias are easy to care for. They are ericaceous (acid-loving) plants so if you don’t have acid soil, put them in a container of ericaceous soil or plant them with generous amounts added to the planting hole. They prefer rainwater to tap water and will benefit from a regular ericaceous feed. You can buy ericaceous soil and feed from Garsons.

Winter is a good time to plant roses, before they start growing in the spring. As well as roses, there’s a good selection of dormant shrubs, trees and perennials in the garden centre, ready to fill in gaps or to plant in containers.

To enjoy your own fruit next summer, buy raspberry, blackcurrant and blackberry bushes now. Plant them where they can spread out and soak up enough sun for the fruit to ripen.

If the ground isn’t frozen or waterlogged, you can plant new additions in January. Make sure you firm them in well to stop the roots freezing. Alternatively, store new plants close to your house in a sheltered spot and keep them watered until you’re ready to plant them.

*There’s 25% off the Plants of the Month in January for Garsons card holders. That means 25% off outdoor plants excluding bedding plants, pre-planted pots and arrangements.
