Gardening by Month - January

Happy New Year! Make a resolution to get more fresh air in the garden. On dry days, you can prepare for the growing season. Weather permitting, it’s good to fork in compost or rotted manure to bare patches in the garden. Avoid digging if it has been frosty or the ground is waterlogged.

If you’ve planted bulbs in your garden borders, help them grow by clearing any fallen leaves and branches. If you don’t have any bulbs springing up, look out for ready-planted pots at Garsons. Snowdrops are particularly lovely around now, so treat yourself to some winter cheer.

If your garden is looking bare, why not plant some containers of colour? Winter flowering pansies, heather and cyclamen all look good in pots. Combine them with ready-planted bulbs for a gorgeous display. Position them where you can best appreciate their flowers and foliage.

Plant a batch of cheerful primroses. The native primrose looks gorgeous in drifts under shrubs and trees, and it tends to spread if it’s in a shady spot. You can also add primroses to containers close to the house and enjoy their colour on gloomy days.

Help your tender perennials through the hard frosts of winter by wrapping them in horticultural fleece. It protects the plant from extreme cold while letting in air, light and rain.

Look after garden birds and other wildlife by keeping a bowl of water at ground level as well as a bird bath. Check that they don’t freeze over. Birds will be grateful for high energy food such as nuts and suet balls. Garsons has a selection of food and habitats for your garden visitors. Keep a section of your garden wild to encourage biodiversity and wildlife.

We wish you a very happy gardening year ahead!
